No One Is Illegal-Toronto presents...
Refugee Stories & Struggles
This event will bring together speakers from Central/South America, Africa, Afghanistan and others discussing stories of struggle and resistance and experiences of displacement...Zahir Ofuq will be sharing his story of displacement.
Help Reunite an Afghani Family!
Zahir Ofuq is a philosopher, writer and as a part of the resistance against the Mujahidin government he fled persecution from Afghanistan. However, his
refugee claim was denied because of perceived connections to the former communist regime.
Zahir has been living in a state of limbo for the past ten years, Canada will not deport him because of the dangerous conditions in Afghanistan, currently caused by Canada’s military aggression and war on the country. But due to Canada’s arbitrary and inhumane refugee system, Zahir is not able to gain status.
Zahir has written nearly 10 books, and over 80 published essays and articles. These are all academic publications in the areas of sociology, philosophy, literature and language. Zahir is renowned for his work on philosophy, and for his work on Afghanistan.
No One is Illegal is helping him gain permanent status in Canada and to reunite him with his family whom he has not seen for the past ten years. His family remains in Pakistan, in hiding, and in constant danger from extremist organizations.
No One is Illegal is submitting a Humanitarian and Compassionate application for Zahir and his family. But due to a system that is designed to be inaccessible to most refugees, the application fee is $1400. However, at the moment, this is the only avenue in which Zahir and his family have any hope of obtaining permanent status.
The event will also mix music and dance ranging from Salsa to Hip Hop to North African Dance.
